The Sky is Everywhere (2022 Movie)

Title: The Sky Is Everywhere

Year Released: 2022

Screenwriter: Jandy Nelson

Director: Josephine Decker

Network Found On: AppleTV+

Main Actors: Grace Kaufman, Jacques Colimon, Cherry Jones

Plot Summary: Lennie is a 17-year-old musical prodigy, destined to go to Juilliard with her big sister Bailey (who is an aspiring actor) when her life is completely derailed by Bailey’s unexpected death. Suddenly she has lost her passion for the clarinet (she literally has trouble playing it after Bailey’s death) and she becomes withdrawn from everyone and everything. Another musical genius from her school, Joe, enters her life and she is immediately drawn to him, but things get complicated between Lennie and Bailey’s former boyfriend, Toby. Toby and Lennie become closer because of their shared grief from Bailey’s death, and Joe catches them in an unexpected moment. Lennie’s grandmother, whom she lives with, talks to Lennie about breaking out of her funk, and they do it together as they have all been grieving Bailey’s death. And Toby helps Lennie win Joe’s heart back.

Quality of the media: This director, Josephine Decker, is well known for her artistry and crafting movies with surreal moments and beautiful imagery. She does not disappoint in this movie, filmed in the gorgeous redwoods on Northern California/Humboldt County. The scenery in this movie is exquisite. And the surreal moments that Decker creates – the two co-stars flying in the air as they play their instruments to each other, a rose garden coming to life while the two co-stars lay in the garden listening to Bach – are stunning.

Opinion: I would not say this is a “rom com.” It is more of a drama/romance movie, as it deals with some serious subjects, and there are some funny moments, but it is definitely not a comedy. It is a beautiful movie to watch, and it deals with some complex emotions surrounding the loss of a loved one and how that can affect different people who were in the loved one’s life. It is a good movie, and any teens who are fans of romance/dramas would enjoy this movie.

Library Program: I really hate to keep saying this would be good for a movie night, so for this library program I want to focus on the scenery that was in this movie. The program could focus on the California Redwoods, which can be over 2000-3000 years old! I would do a program where I could discuss these majestic trees and the ecology of the Northern California forests, and how we can protect these trees for generations to come.
